Unbuilt: 2023

Inspired by a trip to Mexico City to study the work of Luis Barragan, and his Casa Pedregal master piece, the idea was, could you create a new language for architecture on the lava field forests of high country Big Island? A design language that used the materials from the site - lava rock and basalt - brought in minimal structure and shelter - a prefabricated metal roof - and a site design approach that left the raw natural beauty of this landscape untouched. By taking lesson’s from Barragan’s Pedregal, we wanted to create an oasis that defies typical standards of beauty and manicured nature, let the ecologies and hydrology of the site remain, and build a design language that lets you escape into the woods.
