This design-build project opened up a two-bedroom apartment in Makiki into a light-filled, open-air, soft, calm and peaceful space. Every wall was rebuilt and the layout was reorganized to make better functioning, and grander feeling spaces. The custom millwork in the kitchen makes use of a floor-to-ceiling “utility wall” hiding major appliances and contrasts against the elevated cabinets that span across the window. Light slips in above and below these volumes, giving a weightless feeling to an otherwise concrete and heavy building. Special details, like a louvered panel in the bedroom that modulates wind flow, and a sliding wall panel that hides a bookcase, are just a few examples of what make this bespoke crafted space truly unique.
